The motif of this work is based on art history: on the one hand, it alludes to a painting by Jean Fouquet – the right wing of Melun’s diptych to be precise – and on the other to Michelangelo Buonarroti’s Pietà . The choice of the triptych also falls into the art-historical category, but primarily in its tradition, as a tripartite division with different weighting of the respective parts. The left-hand section depicts the Nativity. The centre part refers to life. The right part symbolises the death of the body. The flowing transitions within the trisection and beyond the edge of the picture create a constant recurrence.
